April 2022 Meeting

Tanya is a media industry veteran who turned to philanthropy. In 2018, she started Ewe Can Knit,  teaching adults and children to knit, and now teaches how to teach children to knit. Tanya also serves on the Board of the charity Green Bronx Machine,  a global gardening curriculum for people in need, and teaches knitting through that charity. Tanya runs Ewe Can Knit, a knitting lesson business in Westchester County, NY, where she has taught 65 children to knit since the start of the pandemic. Her passion project Knitting Hope, ensures that knitting’s role in material culture is recognized for the significant impact it has had on maker and wearer alike. She will share how women, both Jewish and not, used knitting and knitted objects as a form of resistance, a means of remembrance, and a well of renewal during and following the Holocaust.

Presentation
Join Tanya as she shares the ways in which knitting – and teaching and writing about it – have been her rock through life’s challenges and how she sees knitting as a way to repair the world. She will share her experiences teaching in the South Bronx and explore the lessons of the historical knitted objects she has uncovered in her research. Tanya has worked with designers Melissa Shinsato and Alix Kramer to publish two contemporary patterns and host knit-alongs that honor objects from the past including The Little Red Dress (Feb 2021) and Dayenu (Feb 2022), a blue sweater inspired by a story of love and freedom.

Mini-lesson:

Book Sale
Come early to our amazing April book sale. You’re going to love the offerings. We have current books and magazines to excite your interest as knitters. Most importantly, be on the lookout for our SPECIAL PROMOTION. The sale runs from 12:30-1:15pm and again when the meeting ends. See you there.

Show and Tell
Once again, we have live show and tell! All are encouraged to get in line to show off their knitted works. The more, the merrier. Let’s keep the descriptions brief, though, to give everyone a chance.

No Break-Out Tables
There will be no Charity Knitting, Beginners Circle, or KALs at this meeting. We will have a box for charity knitting drop-off and a box for dropping off BAKG auction donations.

Updated Policies for Returning to Live Meeting

* No pre-registration will be required.

* Proof of COVID vaccine and booster (if eligible for booster), will be required on the day of the meeting. See below for further details.

* Masks will be required in the meeting room. This may change for future in-person meetings.

* No guests. Members only. If you are not a member, consider becoming a member.

On the Day of the Meeting

* Check-in will begin at 12:30 pm. Check-in will take place in the NYSEC lobby, to the right of the main entrance as you enter. Please arrive on time! Note: No one will be admitted after 1:15 pm, because our check-in people don’t want to miss the meeting.

* Check-in process: Your membership and vaccine status will be verified at check-in. We will not keep copies of your vaccination card. You will be given a BAKG logo pen, to keep, as well as your name tag and a raffle ticket.

* Snacks and beverages: These are permitted, but please keep them to a minimum, and be respectful of the people around you while you are unmasked to eat or drink.   

* Sanitation and hygiene measures: We will have a supply of hand sanitizer, masks, and sanitizing wipes for use on the microphone and appropriate hard surfaces.
